Helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky lays off 160 in Alabama

A helicopter manufacturer in Troy is laying off 160 people, the Troy Messenger reports.

Sikorsky Aircraft's Troy plant is making the decision because of reduced demand for the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, which is a U.S. Navy helicopter and the primary source of the facility's work, according to the report.

The layoffs will complete by the end of August. Lockheed Martin purchased Sikorsky in 2015. Sikorsky employs 650 people in Pike County.

Rep. Martha Roby, R-Alabama, told the Troy Messenger that there's been concern "for some time" that the Troy facility would close down altogether.
