I had originally thought this photo was McConnell leaving the hospital but it is him leaving his home.
Sorry for the confusion.
I have added a second tweet below.

(9,543 posts)Chaplain and a doctor told me they tried, but the brain just would not restart and I had to make the call: keep machines on pointlessly, or face reality. They cried. But they were honest and brave. I am grateful they didn't hide reality.
How long has Mitch been in hospital? At some point even the best insurance won't be enough for doctors to hold a bed for someone with no chance if the power goes off.

(23,600 posts)That means only 52 R's in the senate until January, instead of 53.

(116,296 posts)Either he was already dead or it was not that serious?
If they can keep him "alive" for three more weeks, the Governor of Kentucky does not get to name a replacement.

(9,543 posts)Machines can keep 'the body' functioning when the brain no longer does, but is that life?
I had to give the order to 'turn off the machines' when my husband's brain was too long without O2 on ambulance trip to hospital. ER crew worked fast & furious but the brain would not/could not restart the system. Machines could have kept his tough body going, but he wasn't there anymore and would have been pissed as hell if I didn't give the order to 'let him go'. Autopsy showed the aorta had blown out and though his strong heart kept beating for a pretty good spell, it couldn't get blood to the brain anymore.
It's a really tough call to make, but the only caring one in many circumstances. Nine years later, yes, I have learned to laugh again, but the crying still happens. Love him, miss him, had to be brave for him.
Too bad for Mitch that he was so unloved by 'loved ones' and colleagues that they are keeping alive a shell because he is of more use to them as a non-functioning, non-viable bag of cells than a human who deserves to take his rest.

(18,075 posts)but you definitely did the right thing. My grandmother had an aneurysm and my aunt found her and they did a lot trying to save her, but her brain had been damaged too much. She hung on for another 6 months of misery. It's best to let them go when the time comes.

(9,543 posts)yes, it is so hard. I hope your family has found peace and the blessings of fond memories.
Lately I have been thinking about Terri Schiavo and the whole legal nightmare about keeping her on the machines when the brain was gone.
Oddly enough, that case also hearkens back to using a defenseless victim of reality for benefit of others. And oddly enough that case involved a then member of the US Senate. Bill Frist, then FL Senator, is part of a family that owned a big medical corporation. They got $ for Schiavo's 'care' and the GOP got a lot of 'pro-life' propaganda from it.
So serious and contentious was the legal battle that the US Senate was called back into session to deal with it. If memory serves, I do believe ol Mitch was the top dog of the GOP held Senate at that time.
Fate has a peculiar sense of humor sometimes, eh?

(13,339 posts)And kept on a machine, just like his whole political life, he is still wasting oxygen, and fucking over democracy.
Satan called him and spoke for 20 minutes.
He has a special place at the table awaiting.

(14,815 posts)I have cared for patients who have been "found down" and brought "back" with CPR and this is what I can tell you. Usually they do not survive, but if they do, it is generally in a highly compromised condition, ie, with considerable brain damage and pretty much unable to function. the older they are, and Mitch is 84, the worse their prognosis becomes. It also depends on how long they were "down" and what caused them to become so in the first place. It is generally one of several causes---either a heart attack or severe cardiac arrhythmia leading to cardiac arrest, a stroke (could be hemorrhagic or embolic, but in older patients most likely embolic, caused by a clot), an acute or chronic illness that causes hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain), a fall resulting in head injury especially if not found for some time, prolonged seizures (aka status epilepticus), or a drug overdose. (We can probably rule out the last one with Mitch)
IF Addison Mitchell McConnell is alive but in such a condition, it is time for the family and the RepubliKKKan party to stop pussyfooting around and playing games. He is either dead or incapacitated, and a successor needs to be named by whatever means are in place, PERIOD. THE END. FIN. FINITO.
The people of Kentucky and and American people deserve answers. NOW.
