Trump is the reincarnation of Jubilation T. Cornpone

Last edited Sun Jun 21, 2026, 10:39 AM - Edit history (1)

Everything he touches turns to shit. (EHTTTS)

(A tip o’ the hat to DUer GAJMac)

I had used a line in a previous post quoted from a musical entitled L’il Abner (if you know, you know… if you don’t, look up the comic strip by that name on Wiki. Despite its author and artist Al Capp’s Republican Party affiliation, it was brilliant) and I was thinking about a musical number from the Broadway musical and the film, in fact the only memorable moment (except for the appearance of Julie Newmar as Stupefyin’ Jones 😍 ) sung by the great Stubby Kaye titled Jubilation T. Cornpone here:

?is=pfe7eFpE63khyQrw

If you don’t want to listen, here are the lyrics:

When we fought the Yankees and annihilation was near
Who was there to lead the charge that took us safe to the rear?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Old Toot-Your-Own-Hornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
A man who knew no fear
When we almost had 'em but the issue still was in doubt
Who suggested the retreat that turned it into a rout?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
He wrecked old Tattered-And-Tornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
He kept us hidin' out
With our ammunition gone and faced with utter defeat
Who was it that burned the crops and left us nothin' to eat?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Old September Mornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
The pants blown off his seat
When it seemed like our brave boys might keep on fightin' for months
Who took pity on them and capitulated at once?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Unshaven-And-Shornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
He weren't nobody's dunce
History says that General Grant was pretty good with a jug
Who drank drink for drink with him and wound up under the rug?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Passed-Out-Until-Mornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
His whiskers in his mug
Hearing that a northern spy had come to town for a night
Who gained entrance to her rooms and lost a glorious fight?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Old Weary-And-Wornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
He fought all through the night
There at Appomattox, Lee and Grant were present of course
As Lee swept a tear away, who swept the back of his horse?
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Footsore-And-Forlornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
A picture of remorse
Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone
Completely Outwornpone
Jubilation T. Cornpone
He really saved the day!

My neighbors, my town. It can be lonely times in a small upstate NY rural area.

I went to college in Rochester and occasionally we would take a drive to the hinterlands. Some of the towns were out of those Twilight Zone episodes.

The people all sitting on their front porches staring at every car driving by. You see a lot of Deliverance looking folks on that trip. Yikes!

Now I know there are a lot of good folks living there. Just sharing the impression the towns project to traffic passing through.

Face in the Crowd. I'm surprised that movie didn't make a big resurgence.

I share your surprise, and disappointment - it's a top-notch film on so many levels, including an Andy Griffith who is nothing like Sheriff Andy of Mayberry.

I played 'Senator Jack S. Phogbound' in one production.

My father was a life long Republican and thought Reagan was an idiot. It's a hand full of evil people who pulled the whole country right. Right off a cliff.

I included that clause because if God-forbid, someone is referenced in a cultural post who was a Republican, and it is not acknowledged as such, the Gates of Hell then open up.

I’ve had it done to me several times.

and embarrass himself on the world stage, but he has no feelings. He doesn't give a rat's ass.

It would be nice though to see our interior decorator in chief use and abuse his maga base like this clip:

The most recent was when he stated that he didn’t care about inflation.

That’s a direct and absolute betrayal of America.

I saw this film for the first time when I was a kid and generally didn’t like most musicals because this bursting into song stuff didn’t work for me, Except for West Side Story and weirdly, Carousel.

But I think I was 13 or 14 and it was on NBC Saturday Night at the Movies, I was home alone, and I thought it was terrific. When my mom came home from work that night and I told her what I’d seen, she informed me that it had been considered at best a second-tier musical by the pros and she was though, glad I enjoyed it. It was then that I began to understand how I could like something that others did not and that I was entitled to my opinion. Beforehand, I always thought there was something wrong with me because I loved The Three Stooges and many people, especially my mom, despised them. It was a learning experience.

...so many good musicals.

Li'l Abner just goes over people's heads these days, I think. The song you posted about Jubilation T. Cornpone is a good example. Who knows what the word "reconnoiter" means nowadays? The "second tier" is currently where you find the first tier.

A while back,
I won the Daisy Mae contest.
The judges picked me as the one
who looked most like Daisy Mae.

I won a ski trip to
the Boyne Mountains Resort.

Thanks for the memories!

I was a kid, and had no idea what Al Capp was saying.
