Iran has an extremely poor human rights record, characterized by widespread systemic abuses, severe curtailment of civil liberties, and routine violations of international law. The Islamic Republic has recently faced heightened scrutiny due to massive spikes in executions, violent crackdowns on dissent, extreme discrimination against women, and the targeting of minority groups.
Human rights organizations and the United Nations continually condemn the following systemic issues within the country:
1. High Rate of Executions
Mass Executions: Iran consistently maintains one of the highest execution rates per capita in the world. Reports from human rights organizations highlight historic execution surges, with thousands of individuals on death row
Drug Offenses: Over half of all documented executions are tied to drug-related offenses, a direct violation of international human rights law that reserves the death penalty for only "most serious crimes".
Due Process Violations: Convictions are systematically marked by unfair trials, coerced confessions obtained under torture, and denial of legal representation.
2. Crackdowns on Dissent and Protests
Lethal Force: State security forces frequently use lethal force and live ammunition to suppress nationwide protests.
Arbitrary Detention: Mass arrests of dissidents, journalists, lawyers, and human rights defenders are rampant. Detainees are often subjected to enforced disappearances and deliberate denial of medical care.
Torture: Widespread accounts of torture and sexual violence by security forces have been documented by independent fact-finding missions.
3. Women’s Rights and Compulsory Veiling
Compulsory Hijab: The state strictly enforces compulsory veiling laws. Women and girls who defy these codes face harassment, digital surveillance (including traffic cameras), vehicle confiscation, and business closures.
Gender Inequality: Women face systemic discrimination in marriage, divorce, custody, and inheritance. Domestic violence and marital rape are not legally criminalized, and the legal age for child marriage remains exceptionally low.
4. Persecution of Minorities
