robert reich: "Hawaii just enacted a law that effectively neuters Citizens United. Montana could soon follow suit"

Hawaii just enacted a law that effectively neuters Citizens United.

Montana could soon follow suit via a ballot referendum.

Here's what you should know about the plans to get Big Money out of politics — and how they could be replicated where you live.

anything other than the right thing to do. There is no salvaging American conservatism.

They already see themselves as the default political philosophy in this fascist climate anyhow, so frankly, they don't need to be pandered to.

New Hawaiian law limits corporate spending on politics, other states work to follow suit

The Brief
New legislation signed into law on Thursday bans corporations from political spending in Hawaii.
Proponents say the law circumvents Citizens United, the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled limiting corporate spending on political broadcasts was a violation of the First Amendment.
Hawaii is the first state to enact such a law, but over a dozen others, including California and Montana, are working toward similar legislation.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Hawaii’s Democratic Governor on Thursday signed into law a bill to stop corporations and "dark money" groups from spending unlimited amounts of money on politics.

The Aloha State’s S.B. 2471 states that because governments grant a corporation its powers, Hawaii can simply decline to grant the power to spend on elections. The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2027.

No more using Citizens United to attack Democrats.

Lying that campaign finance reform is not one of the most important Democratic issues in every platform, that "billionaires ... can put unlimited amounts of money into both political parties" as if Republicans are't the ones receiving the vast majority because they ARE corrupt
