1. Another reason Republicans don't support much in the way of scientific research

Years ago, I read about research on the variances of size of the amygdala (the brain's 'fear center') and political leanings. Turns out, the bigger that brain structure, the more likely a person will lean right politically.

You can bet the think tanks for those bent on authoritarianism has a LOT of data on how fear motivates the masses. They pay good money for information on how to better manipulate certain parts of the population. Fear sells, and it sells policy/candidates that are bad for democracy.

2. Republiklans, particularly MAGATS, are afraid, very afraid - of everyone and everything.

I hangout with a lot of Democrats, mostly older, and while they can be cautious of others, they are not generally afraid of anyone except Republiklans, especially MAGATS.

3. I AM one of those older DEMs of which you speak

Lucky enough to grow up in a neighborhood where my brother & I were the only blond haired, blue eyed kids for several blocks. People from many nations lived there and Mom thru amazing block parties that exposed us all to many cultures/peoples/customs/outlooks. I grew up pretty damned fearless.

Now, in old age, I have seen enough to be wary of some strangers. That said, experience has taught me that most people who will lie, cheat, hurt me are white guys who don't deal with their own crap, or want to scam people.
