Europe Moves On

Europe Moves On

The day after being sworn in as Germany’s new chancellor, Friedrich Merz boarded a plane to Paris.

There, he stood side-by-side with French President Emmanuel Macron and unveiled a sweeping new bilateral defense pact—one that notably excludes the United States.

The two leaders called out “the systematic threat Russia poses to our European system,” and in doing so, made clear that Europe’s two largest economies are no longer counting on NATO as a reliable guarantor of security.

The most striking moment came when Macron announced the formation of a Franco-German Defense and Security Council, saying it would “meet regularly to provide operational solutions to our common strategic challenges.”

2. They don't have a choice, really...

Everybody has seen how trump is and how he ignores treaties and pacts that he doesn't like, or that he doesn't understand, which is pretty much all of them.

He never respected a contract in his business days, and that's what he thinks treaties are, just pieces of paper signed by others that he is under no obligation to respect. For him a contract was always just another step in the "negotiation" process which usually involved ruinous court action that his opponents could not afford.

Time for some Thunderdome justice. Bust a deal, face the wheel. Under those rules, he wouldn't have survived this long for sure.

After 80+ years, Europe SHOULD be responsible for their own military safety...

Now unlike the Musk and DOGE team... I think the money saved should be funneled into things that make life BETTER for the American people... like raising base Social Security benefit levels.

I seriously doubt they are going to attempt to make life better for us "little people." Krasnov said a mouthful when he admitted, "I don't care about you; I just want your vote." I truly believe that that holds for that entire party of the selfish and greedy.

Shaving down the Federal Budget to benefit THE PEOPLE would have been something 99% of the public would have supported.

12. The time for tarfiffs, and I'm talking about targeted ones

instead of these incredibly self destructive blanket tariffs against the whole planet (Except Russia, Iran, Belarus and N. Korea) was back in the 80s when whole industries were being offshored.

Republicans are always penny wise and pound foolish and that's why they crash the economy every time they get into power.

Every single damned time.

They're looking ahead and thinking critically about global alliances, mainly seeing the U.S. as more of an enemy than an ally any longer. And it's not just trump. They could work around trump for four years. No... they're main complaint and anxiety is about the citizens of the United States and how not only stupid we are, but they're really not sure about our ability to respect and desire democracy any longer.

I hate it, but we haven't given them any reason to think otherwise, IMO. We keep electing these corrupt fascists.

It's a normal military unit of the german Bundeswehr, except they do cross-training with the french military to foster coordination and understanding.

All goes back to the Treaty of Rome, 1957.

A federal European republic isn’t far off now.

We are.

They are not going to risk their safety with this Putin puppet wrecking ball Krasnov and his band of fascists.

They are not going to be shaken down for cash by us first if they need help. They've all seen what Krasnov has done to Ukraine,
