Authorities with Homeland Securities Investigations at the ICE detention facility Delaney Hall this afternoon arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and charged him with trespassing.
The mayor's arrest following an argument with agents came after a tense week at the privately owned and operated immigrant detention center in Newark.
More HERE.
This from NJ.com, by way of context:
A U.S. Department of Homeland Security official sharply criticized Newark’s mayor on Thursday over his opposition to an immigrant detention center in his city, accusing him of “political antics” that the official said endanger ICE officers and detainees.

(293 posts)Something about the mayor going to an ICE facility and he was ordered to leave. Since he wouldn't leave they arrested him.

(33,940 posts)he was on public property when he was arrested, outside the gates. He was there in his official capacity as the frigging Mayor, because ICE opened the facility without the permits necessary for re-opening it.

Of course, with her dearth of brain cells, she probably thought she was nabbing Cory Booker and Fatass 47 would reward her for going after his alleged enemies.

(2,563 posts)The mayor is in a private prison. The mayor should have the Newark police arrest the agents for false arrest.
First judges now mayors. I can see this regime arresting all Democrat presidential candidates.
We have to dox all ICE agents, defund the agency and put the leaders on trial.

(92 posts)idea of doxing the ICE fascists, they know they are doing dirty deeds. You actually outnumber them, you outclass them, you stand for the communities that are being violated, you can’t lose if you expose their activities and drive them out. Follow the little creep commanders home in the evening and picket their houses with press and cameras. Do it and win!

Newark mayor arrested during congressional visit to NJ ICE facility
Witnesses said the arrest came after Baraka attempted to join a scheduled tour of the facility with three members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation, Reps. Robert Menendez, LaMonica McIver, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.
"We’re at Delaney Hall, an ICE prison in Newark that opened without permission from the city & in violation of local ordinances," Rep. Coleman wrote in a post on X.
When federal officials blocked his entry, a heated argument broke out, according to Viri Martinez, an activist with the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice. It continued even after Baraka returned to the public side of the gates.
“The agents started intimidating and putting their hands on the congresswomen. There was yelling and pushing,” Martinez said. “Then the officers swarmed Baraka. They threw one of the organizers to the ground. They put Baraka handcuffs and put him in an unmarked car.”
Gov. Phil Murphy said he was "outraged" by Baraka's "unjust arrest."

He went back outside, which is where he was arrested.
There is a large crowd now protesting outside 620 Frelinghuysen Avenue, where the mayor was taken to by the Gestapo ICE agents.

(923 posts)"...The reopening of Delaney Hall has seen pushback from Newark officials, who issued a “stop work” order in late March and have filed a lawsuit against the GEO Group. See Related: Newark Issues 'Stop Work' Order On New ICE Detention Center
The city’s mayor accused ICE of opening the facility “without following proper building safety protocols” and without the necessary construction permits, continued certificates of occupancy and requests to change the building’s use.
“They failed to give city officials access to conduct inspections required under municipal ordinances and state code,” Baraka alleged. “This violates city and state law.”
And the not so great part in the above link.
"...The GEO Group and CoreCivic – which runs the Elizabeth Detention Center in Union County – have challenged the state ban in court. The administration of former president Joe Biden took the side of private prison companies in that case, arguing that ICE needed detention centers near airports to expedite operations. A judge ruled in 2023 that CoreCivic could keep its jail in Elizabeth open..."
Prison Company Foresees ‘Unprecedented' Revenue, Announces Massive Newark ICE Lock-Up

"...The Biden administration took the side of private prison companies in that case, arguing in federal court papers that ICE needed detention centers near airports to expedite operations.
“Without a nearby facility, turnaround cases would either remain in the airport for days waiting for their return flight, or be released into the United States with little hope that they would actually depart as required by law,” a statement of interest written by Robert Guadian, Deputy Assistant Director for Field Operations at ICE and DHS in July of 2023. “Second, forcing ICE to close the Elizabeth facility would likely prevent ICE from detaining noncitizens with violent criminal histories that are released from state and local facilities.”
In a statement, U.S. Senator Cory Booker slammed GEO Group’s new contract, saying he’d urged the Biden administration not to reopen Delaney Hall last year.
“GEO Group has a documented history of gross neglect, including malnourishment, inhumane living conditions, forced labor, and the physical and sexual abuse of people detained at its facilities. Yet this administration is cutting them a $1 billion check,” said Booker, a former Newark mayor..."
Prison Company Wants To Bring ICE Detainees To Newark – Despite NJ Ban
https://patch.com/new-jersey/newarknj/prison-company-wants-bring-ice-detainees-newark-despite-nj-ban
"NEWARK, NJ — Nearly three years ago, New Jersey passed a landmark law that bans prisons from making deals with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hold potential deportees, a move that advocates cheered as a major win. But since then, the law has been challenged in court by a private prison corporation that alleges it is “unconstitutional.”
... The GEO Group – one of the largest private prison companies in the nation – has filed a lawsuit against New Jersey state officials, seeking a way around the law in an effort to house up to 600 immigrant detainees at a detention center it owns in Newark, the New Jersey Monitor reported Friday.
...Delaney Hall also previously held up to 450 immigration detainees for ICE from 2011 through 2017, including prisoners from Texas, Louisiana and other states. It’s a source of revenue that the company is seeking to recapture – if it can navigate past New Jersey’s law.
Passed in 2021, the state law bans all prisons in the state – public or private – from making new contracts with ICE to hold federal detainees. Prisons also can’t expand or renew old agreements..."

(33,940 posts)stoking the fire. He was not protesting. He was there on official business because the prison was opened without getting whatever permits that were required. The media is saying he was protesting. The 3 Congress persons who were there waited 1-1/2 hours to do their business, and when they went outside the mayor was surrounded by 20 armed ICE agents, many masked. This story with the 'protest' insertion makes it so very much worse than it already is. The media is using 'protest' as an excuse. Trying to paint the mayor as doing something wrong. Trying to paint protesting as doing something wrong. Even though he was there because he's the frigging mayor.

(5,500 posts)It would have been more accurate to say that just because the mayor and the Tufts graduate student were released (after much protest),
doesn't mean that we in America are "not yet" currently living under a Nazi-like fascist regime.
Fact is, Trump and his minions have, under anonymity and sometimes even cover of night, entered homes, places of businesses, courtrooms, etc.
in masks, without warrant or identification, and even lured people under false pretenses for the purposes of abducting or detaining them..
...Have snatched babies from the arms of women, raided, broke and entered into the wrong homes, and have often sent their "detainees" to places unknown and sometimes for reasons unknown.
And they've given every indication that they not only plan on continuing these (illegal and unconstitutional) actions against alleged illegal immigrants and even CITIZENS, without due process, but plan on ramping them up.
And I, for one, would rather not live in a society in which the only thing keeping these fascist in check, is the occasional public OUTRAGE.
So, while I respect your opinion, it is still of MY opinion that we are currently living under a Nazi-like fascist regime.
