Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office may have been the longest, figuratively speaking, of any U.S. president in history. But we can also say definitively that they were the most disastrous, ever. His draconian deportations, destruction of the federal government, and insane tariff Tilt-a-Whirls have driven his approval numbers so low as to be a modern marvel; the last time a president was this disliked after 100 days, we were fighting a world war and the Slinky was the country’s most popular toy. Trump has ended up here for no other reason than that he pursued the very policies he promised to pursue on the campaign trail. That’s the story of his first 100 days: Americans elected a dumb asshole, and natural consequences followed.
Now let’s consider the next 100 days, which look to be even worse for all of us—including the president. As The New Republic’s Alex Shephard wrote this week, there are a lot of good reasons to believe Trump’s standing with the American people hasn’t hit bottom yet, the main one being that the worst is yet to come. The president, Shephard writes, “is still stubbornly clinging to tariffs, which inevitably will cause product shortages and rising costs in the near future—not to mention a potential recession, the odds of which are worryingly high.”
Last weekend, Apollo Global economist Torsten Slok published a preview of coming attractions in the form of a report documenting what he’s calling the imminent “Voluntary Trade Reset Recession.” As Slok documents, Trump’s economy—though quite sluggish—has been boosted by the fact that inventories rose rapidly as firms acted in anticipation of tariffs being imposed. Now that tariffs have arrived, the sugar high is over and collapse is on the way. The most straightforward way of looking at the future is on page 4 of Slok’s report.

What we have here is the prelude to the summer of scarcity, coming soon to a retailer near you. We are already well and fully in the stage where activity at our ports falls off a cliff. As TNR’s Tim Noah wrote this week:

This shit is gonna wake up the middle class MAGA that doesn't seem to even have a clue that a lot of very wealthy MAGA has acknowledged CHUMP IS A DISASTER FOR EVERYONE IN AMERICA!

2. Often stemming from number 1, they can't really tell what's real and what's unreal.
3. The American media and entertainment industries try hard to blur the lines of reality and fiction.
4. Americans are poorly educated.
5. Polluting, climate killing industries in America are considered successful and rewarded.
I could go on, but it's too depressing.

(63 posts)I have seen clips where they spout off about being 10 steps ahead of liberals in knowing what is going to happen. I believe many magas will embrace the shortages as part of the planned pain before all the jobs come flooding back to our shores. They will be told and convinced that in two weeks things will start to change. How many two weeks are they going to believe this crap is the unknown. Some probably believe that infrastructure week is coming soon too. They will refuse to believe their own eyes and somehow it will all be the libs fault.

(48,968 posts)But any reasonable person will be able to draw a straight line connecting it to tariffs.
It'll be hard to blame this on Biden but the Trump administration will do it. Just like stock market. Last year it was up because of Trump even though Biden was president. This year it's down because of Biden even though Trump is president.
On a different note, Teslas might be cheaper now.

(4,391 posts)I think we seriously underestimate the support this asshole has. The hardcore cult will never turn on him no matter what and there’s another 12-15% that will give him the benefit of every doubt first.
And then in the end it doesn’t really matter. Approval polls won’t take them out of power. They’re here for four years. Buckle up.

(2,546 posts)One side representing the U.S., others for China, Canada, Mexico, et al. Start pre-tariffs to get the hang of it, and then see the effects of tariffs.
For example, we raise the tariffs on Chinese goods, there's less consumption in the U.S. Less consumption leads to jobs being lost, which further reduces purchasing. Stores close, causing bankruptcies and lost rental payment. Factor in the unemployment payments and everything else. So company A decides it's the right time to build a t-shirt factory. How long will that take, the investment, what kinds of jobs will be created, are there workers for this type of plant. As time marches on, see the effects on the economy, always highlighting of course the effect on GDP/debt. All the while, the economy plodding along as it was prior to fRump is in the background.
I'm not a gamer so I don't know for sure, but I have to imagine they can be quite sophisticated, and a reasonably accurate model for this could be created. I'd play!

(885 posts)was self inflicted. We were clearly getting the economy under control and inflation was decreasing. That is, until Trump an his ill advised corrupted staff decided to destroy our country. And the sad part, is he actually thinks he is doing the right thing. And the MAGATS are falling right in line, with absolutely no proof these shenanigans will work. I thiought the next 4 years were going to be bad, but never at this level of bad.
Be prepared for a f'ed up summer, and loss of income due to upcoming supplies and prices. Keep your spending to a minimum. Try to keep your job, if you can.
If you want to survive the next 4 years, there will be sacrifices we all must make, until he leaves office. If he leaves the office. Grrrrrrr

I am literally sitting here shaking my head back and forth with my mouth hanging open. I am saying to myself, "Take a breath. Take a breath. OK..? NO! NOT OK!!!".
A few weeks ago my immediate family (in a general conversation at Easter Dinner no less) sincerely said they would be willing to lose 30% of their savings and retirement if that was what it would take to permanently destroy this GOP's sadistic and fascist agenda. I thought this myself many times...but I'm ill and near poverty in CA and have no kids so I don't have much anyway. But this current situation is sort of like "Phoenix rising from the ashes" or "The Tower" tarot card.
We are going to have to forfeit a lot since our democracy has been destroyed. It will take decades to recover, if we ever do. The majority of voting Americans chose this.
None the less...I AM VERY ANGRY!!!
The US voted for this...AGAIN!!!
