Trump administration splits with allies on holding Moscow responsible for war

The US is opposing calling Russia the aggressor in a G7 statement on the third anniversary of Moscows full-scale invasion of Ukraine, threatening to derail a traditional show of unity, according to five western officials familiar with the matter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyys participation at a virtual G7 summit on Monday has also not yet been agreed, the officials said.
The disagreement comes after US President Donald Trump blamed Ukraine for the war, described Zelenskyy as a dictator without elections, and suggested that Russia should be invited back into the G7.
The US envoys have objected to the phrase Russian aggression and similar descriptions that have been used by G7 leaders since 2022 to describe the conflict, the western officials said.
The worlds leading economies have traditionally issued a statement of support on February 24, the day on which the full-scale invasion started three years ago.

Maybe the White House could try explaining why.

President Zelenskyy talked the United States of America into spending $350 billion to go into a war that basically couldnt be won, Trump said. The only thing he was really good at was playing Joe Biden like a fiddle. He played him like a fiddle. Trump repeated his characterization of Zelenskyy as a dictator and asserted without clear evidence that Zelenskyy is refusing to hold an election because he is losing the support of his citizens.
The American president delivered the unscripted remarks with the confidence of a man who didnt appear to care at all about the geopolitical or electoral consequences.

Its worth emphasizing, of course, that Trumps rhetoric isnt just dangerously bizarre, its also wildly at odds with reality. The American presidents anti-Ukraine lies have also drawn international rebukes from traditional U.S. allies, and even some congressional Republicans have carefully expressed disagreement with Trumps radical nonsense.
Theres even reason to believe the White House is not on board with the broad American mainstream. The latest national poll from Quinnipiac University asked respondents, Do you think the United States should trust Russian President Vladimir Putin, or not? At a point in our history in which the public is deeply divided on many issues, 81% of Americans dont agree on much, but in this survey, 81% of people said the United States should not trust Russias authoritarian leader. (Click the link for more information on the polls methodology and margin of error.)
And yet, there was Trump in the Oval Office last week, telling reporters on camera that he trusts Putin.

.....But hes doing it anyway. Presidents only get so much political capital, and for reasons Trump has never made any meaningful effort to explain, hes decided to invest his finite political capital into supporting the authoritarian regime in Moscow.
Maybe someday, the White House can explain why.

(2,573 posts)We are not going to sit here for the next four years pretending Russia didn't invade Ukraine because the dictator of Russia has blackmail material on our President.
Its time for Democrats and all others to stand up and say NO MORE TRUMP!
This IS THE LINE. Two unelected foreign national criminals are running this country in the place of an elected criminal who should have never been allowed to run for re-election. This HAS TO END NOW!

(10,549 posts)Russia was invited, thats why it became the G8 for a while. Reverted to G7 when Russia invaded Ukraine the first time around. if the present regime is acting like a Soviet satellite nation, why should it remain in the G7?
