I was called a libta*d hobbit the other day, and it got me thinking about LOTR

Frodo the hobbit defeated Sauron.

We're surrounded by orcs and goblins in the form of Magats. Some of us are, indeed hobbits, toiling quietly against the daily evils of Felon47 and his minions. We have elves - lawyers who undertake the larger tasks of lawsuits. We have dwarves in the form of YouTubers and tech wizards.
We have lots of Galadriels.
Now we need a Gandalf.

I read LOTR as a teen in 1965. The movies came out in the BushCheney admin as war loomed. There’s much I loved in the books, but my favorite bit from the movies took place in the dark mines of Moria, and I needed to hear it then.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
