Greenland Poll: 85% to 6% against joining US

A new poll shows that an overwhelming 85% of Greenlanders do not want the island to become part of the US, despite US President Donald Trump's push to take control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Trump has ramped up calls to take the world's largest island, rich in natural resources and home to a US space facility.

"I think we are going to have it," Trump said on Saturday, insisting the island's 57,000 residents "want to be with us".

However, a poll by research company Verian for newspaper Sermitsiaq in Greenland and Danish media outlet Berlingske shows only 6% of residents want to join the US, with 9% undecided.

3. Well, it's not a new idea

This is not a new idea.

However, we also think it is essential to know the history of the U.S. and Greenland to fully understand Trump’s idea.

1867 – The U.S. had sought to acquire Greenland several times before starting in 1867 when then-Secretary of State William Seward (who oversaw the acquisition of Alaska) tried to buy Greenland, too. Seward even advocated for the military annexation of Greenland and Iceland. The U.S. almost pulled off the acquisition – offering $5.5 million. But at the last minute, Seward (for reasons still not clear) pulled back.

1910 and 1946 – The idea came back up in 1910 and again in 1946 (the U.S. offered Denmark $100 million - $1 billion in today’s dollars – for the island). And there have been various discussions about the U.S. bolstering U.S. military operations – including basing an entire U.S. Naval fleet – in Greenland.

Interestingly and not well known – The U.S. militarily occupied Greenland during World War II after Denmark was invaded and occupied by Germany to prevent Nazi forces from then sending troops to occupy Greenland. The U.S. has long seen Greenland as vital to U.S. national security and has had a military presence there ever since at Pituffik Space Base.

History is great, but it should never, ever be an excuse for threatening to take over another country. There are probably some reasons to take over a country, I honestly can't think of any right now, but history itself is not one of them. History is there to teach us about the mistakes and errors of the past as well as the triumphs and joys. Not give us an excuse to run over another country's sovereignty.

Actually thanks. I had missed that. At some point I knew that the genocide had stopped, but it was a period in my life when I wasn’t noticing much beyond getting up each day. I never realized that it was Viet Nam that had stopped it.

7. History is just that, history. What's happening now is what we need to look at.

85% of the residents of Greenland don't want us. Only 6% do.
Give it a few more weeks of Trump's rape of the US, and it'll be an even more one sided poll.
Our new reality is that Trump wants to turn the US into a shit hole country, with him in charge. As time passes, the world will see that more clearly.
This isn't something I would wish to see inflicted on any other country.

—he has no intention of buying Greenland, but by pretending otherwise, he stirs controversy and keeps people guessing. Perhaps that’s his true objective—who knows?

A large majority of residents in Greenland are against President Trump’s wish to acquire the island territory, according to a survey published Wednesday.

The Verian poll, conducted for Danish newspaper Berlingske and Greenland’s newspaper Sermitsiaq, found that 85 percent of the Arctic island’s residents do not want to join the U.S. Another 6 percent of respondents said they were in favor of joining, while 9 percent were undecided.

Roughly 45 percent of the island’s residents see Trump’s push to take control as a “threat.” Another 43 percent said they see it as an “opportunity,” while 13 percent were undecided, according to the survey.

Trump has argued that the U.S. acquiring Greenland is paramount for national defense and that Denmark will eventually “come along” on the potential sale of the autonomous territory. He did not rule out using military force to get it done.

Both Denmark and Greenland’s leadership have repeatedly asserted that the island, which is rich in rare earth minerals, is not for sale.

“We don’t want to be Danes,” Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede previously said. “We don’t even want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.”

Greenland is not without bargaining power. Just tell Trump that if he keeps threatening them, France and Denmark will be invited in to take over the base.
