AI weapon detection system at Antioch High School failed to detect gun in Nashville shooting

A district official said the system failed to detect the shooter's handgun because of where cameras were in the school.

An artificial intelligence-powered weapon detection system failed to pick up the handgun a 17-year-old Nashville, Tennessee, student used in a school shooting Wednesday that killed a 16-year-old girl, officials said.
The software, called Omnilert, failed to detect the gun because of where cameras were in Antioch High School, Metro Nashville Public Schools spokesperson Sean Braisted said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

But the system was activated by police brandishing their weapons during the response to the shooting, Braisted said.

Omnilert connects to the school's existing network of cameras and uses AI technology to detect weapons, he said, but "in this instance, based on the shooter's location in proximity to the cameras, it wasn't close enough to get an accurate read and to activate that alarm."

I asked an impertinent question last week. It was insulted, but it was fake outrage.

I asked if it could predict stock movements tomorrow. It won't try. Humans have ideas about tomorrow.

So I don't think AI is all it's cracked up to be.

I get so dam sick of ComCast inital AI answering especially when AI could not begin to understand what
my need if different than the canned responses the automated. Eventually it turns you over to a human after asking question after question. Quite exasperating and another thing about TV providers..they made it now that you have to install new services. Some of us older ones have no idea how to do that so they charge you for the service if the employee comes out to connect you. Profit you know--once they got you cornered. Capitalism only services those with capital and the worker/retiree has & to put up with it
