…was the lack of strong resistance by the opposition parties, the German states and the people. Couple that with the extraordinary powers he seized after the Reichstag fire and snap elections and he prevailed. Those are the lessons I learned from the article applicable to this similarly perilous time: NO accommodation, NO acquiescence, NO appeasement NO suspending Congress so he can ram through his cadre of modern Nazi functionaries to do his bidding. The pressure of we the people on Congress, on state governments and courts is therefore critical to ensuring we don’t go the same route. As Jefferson noted when opposing Adams’ efforts to become a new American king via the Alien and Sedition Acts the true source of power in our democracy is the people as we are the ultimate safeguard against tyranny and so he waged his battle in accordance with that principle, and prevailed, and so must we.
