Bird flu strikes chicken farm in Matteson [IL]: 'A pretty devastating blow'

https://abc7chicago.com/post/bird-flu-strikes-kakadoodle-chicken-farm-matteson-multiple-hens-die-disease/15827407/

MATTESON, Ill. (WLS) -- The first known outbreak of bird flu at a farm in Illinois this year has been reported in the south suburbs.

It's a devastating blow to "Kakadoodle" in Matteson, and they will now have to operate in a different way over the next 150 days. The owners told ABC7 it's been a whirlwind of a week dealing with the setback.

Just one week ago, everything seemed normal in the henhouse. They had 3,000 hens, and now none of them are left.

Absolute cheapest dozen of basic white eggs were $7.49.

I honestly don’t know how folks afford them. Much of the year, I’m shoving two to three dozen eggs a week to my niece who lives round the corner. She and her husband have 3 little kids.

This time of year my ladies are taking their annual winter break, so I’m getting about 2 a day, which is perfect for Dh and I but doesn’t leave extras.

I think they’re into scrambled eggs, though sometimes they talk about pancakes from scratch.

Also, eggs might be cheaper than cereal at this point too.
