The bishop who enraged Trump with her sermon is actually part of the majority

Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde delivered a powerful and compassionate sermon at a national prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday. While President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance sat in the sanctuary, the bishop challenged the new executive orders harming vulnerable communities, including immigrants and LGBTQ+ Americans.

Predictably, Trump took to Truth Social to denounce the “so-called Bishop” as a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater” and accusing her of bringing “her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way.” He dismissed her sermon as “nasty in tone,” “boring” and “uninspiring,” going so far as to demand an apology from her and her church.

Neither Budde nor her church should apologize for following Jesus. Despite President Trump and his allies attacking Budde, it’s important to recognize that her compassionate sermon does not represent some left-wing fringe of American Christianity. Budde’s words reflect the values held by a majority of American Christians — a fact that Trump’s divisive rhetoric seeks to obscure.

“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country,” Budde proclaimed. “And we’re scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families — some who fear for their lives.”

Trump and Vance might have been surprised to hear such a strong embrace of LGBTQ rights by a bishop, because the far-right evangelical and Catholic leaders who surround them are the chief purveyors of anti-LGBTQ hate. Yet they’re far from the norm. A strong majority of U.S. Christians — including Catholics and evangelicals — support nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals, according to the Public Religion Research Institute.

views about religion, some churches will be leading the fight against fascism. They will stand up for LGBTQ rights, naturalized citizens, children born in the US of immigrant parents, people needing food, clothing, medicine, and housing as the fascist agenda takes hold.

There were churches in Germany that gave into Nazi leadership. But there was a coalition of churches and their clergy who spoke out against Nazi policies, worked secretly with underground resistance organizations, hid people who were Nazi targets and helped smuggle them out of the country. They were known as the Confessing Church, composed of Lutherans, Baptists, and other Calvinists. Some were forced into exile. Some of their leaders were imprisoned in concentration camps where they died of disease, starvation, or execution. A few survived the camps.

But…we all know there are a lot of churches that should see taxation preaching politics from the pulpit.

He can say what he wants, but she did not enter the political sphere with her comments.

I love that this got under his skin soooo bad…just makes him squirm and look/be the small weak man he is.

Isn’t that what one would expect from any religious leader?

He can’t stand it because the optics were so bad and he knew it. Made him look the small weak man he is.

I love this for him and his amoral ilk

Conservative Christianity - "Thou shalt not steal" Thou shalt be allowed to steal if you're rich, Matthew 19:24

I'm never going to call Trump-supporting Conservative Christians adherents of Christianity, they are of a different religion completely alien in terms of the tenets of Christianity.

I can imagine the rich and powerful sitting around 6,000 years ago and bitching; "these poor fuckers are always asking for food, money, shelter, etc., "What if we gave them this invisible sky being that controls everything?" "If we can convince enough of them that their 'true reward' comes in their afterlife, they won't pay attention to how they're getting fucked-over in this one".

It's a win-win!!

How naive to complain about this!

Those are the aims, the features of the new administration.

Some people are slow learners, it seems.

Give it a year or so, and Trump voters will realize they have been suckered, patsied, led astray, flimflammed and voted against their own best interests.

Stuck with it, all of us. 4 years or - hopefully - less.
President Vance might be more amenable to act like a normal human being, or at least be led in the right direction.

I know one guy that is always praying that says he Loves Trump but hates Obama ...because "Obama is a narcissist! " He tells me he can "tell by looking at him!"
Another has a medal around his neck and is always kissing it and then talking about killing people that disagree with him and using the most foul sexist, racist language..

Total Bullshit! I asked the first clown. "What happened to that Divine Being that was supposed to be guiding him? Is he taking a nap?
Jackass just smirked and laughed!

Reminds me of an incident I had many many years ago when I was a teen and some guy from Mississippi was talking about throwing bricks during a race riot.. I asked him if he considered the damage he was doing..he just laughed

I never go to Church thanks to these kinds of people...and never will
