(57,396 posts)got caught tweaking the algorithm so disinformation gets maximum while the debunking gets suppressed... This past fall there were almost as many "blackface" accounts on Twitter as there were genuine black accounts. Donnie literally could not have won without this critical bit of "assistance"...

I admit, Im sensitive because that raking the forest bs was directed at my own community after a wind driven fire that destroyed many homes of people I care about.

(51,706 posts)Diesel trucks and buses with a gross vehicle weight rating(GVWR) that are greater than 14,000 pounds (lbs), must reduce exhaust emissions by meeting particulate matter (PM) filter requirements and upgrading to a 2010 or newer engine model year (EMY).
...
The Regulation does not apply to:
Public Agency and Utility Vehicles (Not Federal)
Since fire departments are non-federal public agencies, the State of California wouldn't be able to stop them from coming in and helping. Besides...uhh...2010 (the year selective catalytic reduction first became required on diesel engines) was fifteen years ago. I suspect the State of Oregon has enough fire apparatus that's no older than 2010 that they could have sent that equipment to California and not worried about the ARB's regulation if it applied to fire apparatus in the first place - which it does not.
I just don't get how we've gotten so stupid so fast.

The stupid have been promoted to the Place Of Honor by the oligarchy. All their social media heroes are front and center so these dumbfucks must be winning, right?

(121,193 posts)of our populace has been going on for over 50 years, helped along by an anti-intellectual strain that has been present since the first European invaders. . excuse me. . .colonists. There is a reason we actually had a political organization called the "know-nothing party". Nearly forty years ago, I read an article in a literary magazine that talked about how much money we spent on education, and how poor the outcomes, concluding that such could only be intentional. Almost daily since then, I have seen the truth of their conclusions, but never more so since 2015, on an escalating basis.

(121,193 posts)(military father), as an outcast, I saw a lot of truly depressing things. Thank goodness for my college, which actually expected/respected brains. It was a four-year grace period in a world that clearly loathes critical thinking.

(2,714 posts)and had exceptional teachers...well-read, world travelers, 'thinkers", questioners. etc...I was lucky. I went to JFK's funeral,...then my first job after school was in Memphis playing in the symphony and teaching at the then Memphis State University. I was there when Dr. King was killed. So I was close to all of that and always was attracted to....certain people, and certain people were attracted to me... we somehow 'found' each other. Very creative, folks-- artists, musicians, poets, clowns, mimists, actors.
We also had a BMW "motorcycle gang." One of us was the poet who later became a zen buddhist roshi in El Paso, one was a glass blower who had been a fire jumper in CA, a third was a clown and puppeteer who had gone to the Emmet Kelly School in Fl along with his wife. So I hung with a very eclectic group of people. The Vietnam war was a constant then of course but I do not remember the issue of the poor education system in the US coming up. Maybe we all just realized how bad it was, and just knew that somehow we had beat it.

(121,931 posts)"Anti-Intellectualism in American Life," by Richard Hofstadter (1963).
Hofstadter described anti-intellectualism as "resentment of the life of the mind, and those who are considered to represent it; and a disposition to constantly minimize the value of that life." He further described the term as a view that "intellectuals...are pretentious, conceited... and snobbish; and very likely immoral, dangerous, and subversive ... The plain sense of the common man is an altogether adequate substitute for, if not actually much superior to, formal knowledge and expertise."

We've been stupid for a very long time, and apparently we want it that way.

(1,025 posts)It's pretty clear they were required to be stopped and tested. Most people would not associate that sort of detour with an emergency response. I'm not sure why they are gaslighting the public about "misinformation" over an irrelevant detail (emission vs. safety testing).
The whole point of safety testing is that when an emergency _does occur_ you're ready to go and can trust your equipment.
If your friend was drowning and there was a safety ring nearby, would you grab it and throw it--or safety check it first?
If there were valid reasons for redirecting the trucks there, articulate them so the public understands. But to imagine that the public is upset over emission testing is missing the point that they're upset over unnecessary delays to emergency response. To me, this sort of thing invalidates Newsom as a candidate. Beshear wouldn't pick silly fights like this. He'd either explain it or fix it.

let into CA. Obviously, the lying idiot has no idea of the geography of CA, since Sacramento is nowhere near the OR border, as is clearly shown by glancing at a map. And the OR fire chief clearly had no problem with the safety check.
While gavin has disgraced himself in my estimation, that disgrace is not about his handling of this horrific emergency.

(1,025 posts)Again, the issue is why the detour? That's what people care about.
Explain why and/or fix it, but don't pretend there's some grand battle against misinformation when the misinformation isn't relevant. Where they were stopped isn't relevant. What they were stopped for isn't relevant. What's relevant is the simple fact that they were stopped during an emergency.
I'll pose the question again because it's demonstrative of how most of the general public interprets this information through an apolitical lens:
Also try:
If you had a kitchen fire, would you safety check the fire extinguisher before you used it? Would you not use the fire extinguisher at all if it had moved to "recharge" status?
If your friend was shot and you had to drive them to the hospital, would you do a circle-of-safety, stay below the speed limit the entire time, and come to a full stop at all stop signs?
If you were a doctor and someone came in with a snakebite, but your last pack of anti-venom was one day expired, would you refuse to give it to them in the name of safety?

A quick google check says that it is a 10.5 hour drive from Oregon to California.
Maybe they shouldn't have stopped at all. Whose fault is that? Newsome? Please note I am being sarcastic. I have no idea what protocols fire companies may have had for this trip.
Per usual, it appears people are deliberately lying, or using the way conspiracies usually work, using a little bit of truth, sprinkled with a whole lot of lies.

(1,025 posts)And agree that it demonstrates they were travelling and deploying as planned, rather than being hindered.
This is the link that I will be sharing as it best captures the full context of their deployment.

EDIT: A little-used distinction that would help clarify discussion on this: the Oregon firefighters were relief-responders, not first-responders.

(15,227 posts)So sad to see it here on DU. Thank you for correcting this one.

(18,648 posts)When the information environment is filled with venemous snakes like Rupert Murdoch and Elon Musk, the value of places like DU become incalculable. Throw in Ronald Reagan's political henchmen working to eliminate the Department of Education, and We the People can notice a pattern when it comes to who is allowed to become "woke."
Of course, had the nation an honest news media, Trump 1 would never have happened. The press lied and omitted truth to an extent I had not thought possible until I heard how fast the oligarchs' accounts have swelled. And now that Herr Shitler has returned for a second go-round, Corporate McPravda have abandoned even the pretense of journalism.
Still, we need freedom of the press more than ever. And that's how Democracy works and how Democracy shall prevail. And it's why the Founder's put freedom of the press in the First Amendment. The free exchange of ideas is how free people thrive and stay that way.
