The Democratic gains in a strong Republican year set up a chance for them to win majorities in 2026
Wisconsin Republicans held on to the
state Legislature in Tuesdays election, but the flipping of 14 Senate and Assembly seats from red to blue provided the clearest evidence yet that the 2011 partisan gerrymander was real and is now dead.
Republicans will maintain majorities in both the Assembly and Senate though at much slimmer margins than during the most recent legislative session. The math sets up a chance for the Democrats to retake at least one chamber in 2026, especially if Republicans face the usual midterm headwinds that check a new president.
Senate Republicans lost four seats, going from a supermajority that could override Democratic Gov. Tony Evers vetoes to an 18-15 majority. The four Democratic pickups resulted from new voting maps legislative Republicans and Democratic Gov. Tony Evers agreed to after the newly liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court threw out GOP-gerrymandered districts last year

(10,317 posts)You'd have to add up total Dem votes for all legislative races vs total Dem votes for Harris and compare them.

(10,317 posts)We elected Democrats for Gov, Lt Gov, Sec State, Atty Gen, Educ Commissioner and enough legislative seats to take away the Repub super majority.
I am baffled by it as well.

(17,524 posts)Tell me how someone votes for Baldwin and Trump.
Something stinks.

(46,417 posts)Obviously we ended up with a candidate who had to have a very short campaign, who didn't get selected through a primary process, etc. Also, it appears that some of the voters only voted in presidential election and didn't bother to vote down ballot. So Trumpers specifically came out to vote for Trump.

(6,485 posts)Presidential in Wisconsin:
Trump - 1,697,219
Harris - 1,667,852
Senate
Baldwin - 1,672,394
Hovde - 1,643,232
There's about a 54K difference between Trump and Hovde. That's 54K voters who are of the Trump cult, only come out in 2016, 2020 and 2024, and basically vote for Trump and leave the rest of the ballot blank.

(46,417 posts)They didn't care about down ballot races.

(6,485 posts)It's why he won in 2016, 2024 and nearly in 2020, while the GOP got shellacked in 2018, 2022 and in special elections. There's a significant number of voters who are strictly Trump voters, not GOP voters and when he isn't on the ballot, they stay home.
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the future when Trump is no longer on the ballot.

(26,685 posts)Scott Walker and his thugs had the districts fixed so a 50/50 total statewide vote would net the Democrats 30% of the legislature (I forget the actual percentages)
