I'm usually a positive person. But I don't want to see anyone. Don't want to go out of the house. I just want to climb into bed and watch some uplifting tv shows. I don't know why this election is hitting me so hard. Wow!

(158,412 posts)oh right, finding out just how many Americans approve of fascism
I not only feel betrayed, I feel like I'm surrounded by the enemy! And here I thought Americans were better than that.
I have ZERO DOUBT what side Trump voters would have been on during WWII. And how about this - I've asked conservatives I know to name ONE THING that helped them, one thing - they can't - all they have is hatred for "THOSE PEOPLE". That is IT.

(4,234 posts)What I noticed was EVERYBODY was being unusually polite, thoughtful, obliging. Well, everyone but that one asswipe in a big old GM cluncker of a tank who damn near drove over me trying to get to the left turn lane first. And yes, he DID have a Trump bumper sticker.
I think it likely most people I observed yesterday were in a state of stunned depression too. There was an aura of thoughtful kindness and real attempts to make eye contact, say kind words.

(92,332 posts)I did go grocery shopping today and there was no shortage pendejo bumper stickers and hats. But few were making eye contact and the hat wearers were kind of smug. I did my best to avoid everyone.

(5 posts)I've never felt overwhelmingly bad about losing an election because I was always confident that the ship of democracy would right itself. But I can say with certainty that I haven't felt this terrible about anything, since my mom died of Covid back in 2021. She was a Trump supporter and an anti vaxxer.
For the past 48 hours, I've done nothing but doom scroll. I have no motivation to do anything.
I just got a phone call and found out that I'm finally hired on at a VA Hospital, after applying months ago. I start working there in a couple of weeks. I'm a little scared Trump is going to take a blow torch to every single agency in the government and I'll wind up without a job. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought my financial destiny would ever be in the hands of Elon Musk.

(4,693 posts)I've been a VA doctor for about 25 years in Texas and Florida. It's got its ups and downs, but it's better than the private sector for sure.
I will probably retire in February for a few years and then do some part-time, laid-back GP type work in Canada. Or not.

(6,857 posts)Each day I will feel a little more hopeful, as we move closer to the 2026 midterms. I know thats a long way off, but I think the Senate map is a lot more favorable to Democrats.
Hang in there, theres really only so much chaos even Trump can impose. We will survive.

(52,208 posts)That is why I am down to 83 pounds. Fortunately I'm a realist and expected it to a degree. It is a form of self protection and has kept me from jumping off a very tall building, for now.
I have also become a misanthrope and that has helped me to prepare for anything.

(52,208 posts)My dad was a realist and so am I. People often find this as being pessimistic but I do not.
That's why I am not as depressed as I would be/should be. I see it as it really is with America and it has become even more crystal clear since 2016. It isn't pretty or "pie in the sky" nonsense of trying to change anyone else. It is futile and a waste of time and energy.
I am a fighter and have a lot of energy and have been my whole life. I'm pooped out.

(30,306 posts)I hardly slept on Tuesday, and I haven't been hungry. It's tough to realize that my fellow countrymen voted en masse for an amoral lowlife, with the brain matter of a gnat, as president for the second time. Right now, I despise all of them. I don't want to be around anyone who voted for the POS. My hope is that they get screwed as much as the rest of us when Trump f***s up the economy, and everything else. A pox on all their houses!!!

(4,935 posts)I stopped watching cable news, and I stopped reading the first two sections of the newspaper, which contain the national and world news. I just skipped to the Life section and read that and sports. It was a good year before I even ventured back to Rachel's show.
Today I read the comics and the sports. It just happened, so it's still raw. I just need some time to process.

(329 posts)I, too, felt like I was kicked in the stomach. Lots of reasons for that, of course. But I remembered what a rush I got when Kamala came forward as the candidate--which was reflected by what seemed to be a universal outpouring of joy and love. This continued, and even built, during the campaign. Such a stark contrast to the hate and fear on the other side!
Then, instantly, that huge bubble of joy was pierced and deflated. It was like watching the death of a loved one. It will take me some time to get over it.

(16,386 posts)My dad was a Republican. He was fighting the fascist racist system of government that was the Arkansas Democratic Party at the time. My dad worked really hard to try and bring about what he called a "2 party system". He really believed that if everyone had the ability to cast a secret ballot, and he believed everyone. The more people who freely voted, the better things would be.
That is why I believed that once everyone at the convention voted, without any backroom deals (like the old days), everyone voting their conscience that the correct decision would be made.
I have lived under that guiding principle for 76 years.
I think it is wrong.

(10,778 posts)Perhaps we would have lost anyway, but an election in which people -- based on where they live (usually populous areas) are subjected to long wait times in excess of and hour or two to vote, the election is not free or fair. 5 to 10% leave or don't join the line. Numbers are higher for longer lines. And when a person does wait in a long line the are less likely to vote in the next.
There are those among us who cheer long lines as a sign of high turnout when the opposite is true. When there are lines in an area turnout is suppressed. Lines are the result of poor administration and a failure to prioritize our most sacred right, the right to vote, the cornerstone of our constitutional democratic republic.
Add that to the fact that populous areas with lines are overwhelmingly in Democratic leaning, or Democratic strongholds, so lines disproportionately suppress the vote of one party.
And, when you through in ballots being rejected for meaningless technicalities, ID requirements, purging voters from rolls, allowing challenges from random citizens, our elections have been neither free or fair for decades.
Don't give up. Reconnect to your ideals and find ways to lobby for truly free and fair elections for every American.
(BTW, i, a 65 yo white lady, cannot produce a birth certificate that matches my social security card, license, or anything else because my mom put the name of my step-father, who had not legally adopted us, when she got my sister and I SS cards. Yes, I need a legal name change but that costs and depending on the state, takes serious time.)

It's because we really thought she would pull it off, and that it would rival 2008 numbers or surprass 2020!
I didn't expect this to happen. How could someone this evil crawl back? Plus these assholes have the three branches so no checks. No damn checks and balances with these freaks.
