the old (new deal) coalition is long gone.
southern poor, unions, teachers, minorities, poor and middle class white folk
the south left in 1968 in response to the voting rights and civil rights acts
the unions left (died) when reagan was in power
the poor white folk are gone, in fact, in american politics the poor haven't existed since reagan, the working class white folk are divided between those who remember the unions and those who hate brown people.
the minorities are still there, but ... they are minorities
the middle class white folk are gone since the republicans did away with the middle class once the got the poor (poc haters) and the rich (democracy haters)
thinking that the Democratic Party needs to do this or that to regain their relevance in this twilight-zone world is just silly. The Democratic Party as we know it does not exist, we just have the shell of a party with hollow platitudes and empty cheers.
Less than 7% of the work force is unionized, and that does not include undocumented workers. School teachers have to buy their own supplies out of their own pockets. Corporations report record profits. The poor and homeless have disappeared from the political conversation.
Books have been banned and burned.
and all this before Trump America gets started
he has the presidency, he will have a totally compliant congress, he owns the judiciary and more than half the population supports his goals
we failed to defeat him in an open democracy, what chance will we have in a totalitarian regime
better we start secret underground societies and come up with special handshakes and passwords, the idea that we will be able to protest openly in a system where the military is ordered to shoot "rioters" is just insane.
it's not a coup
it's just another battle in the civil war
we're losing, btw

(804 posts)In the OP I do not refer to POC at all, simply POC haters - those southern dems who moved to the repubs either during the 60's in response to legislation or by the 80's in response to reagan.
