AZ-01, AZ-06: How Arizona voters could reshape Congress in the 2024 election
Along with everything else thats on the ballot this election year, so is the U.S. House of Representatives. All nine seats of Arizonas congressional delegation are before voters, but in reality, only two are expected to have any suspense.
In Congressional District 1, which covers most of northeast Maricopa County from central Phoenix to Fountain Hills, seven-time Republican Congressman David Schweikert is running against Democrat Amish Shah. Until 2022, Schwiekert had run in a safely Republican district. But due to multiple ethics scandals and a redrawing of the state's districts, Democrats are hopeful this will be the year they unseat him.
In Congressional District 6, which includes parts of Tucson and covers the southeastern corner of the state, there is a repeat showdown between candidates. Republican Juan Ciscomani defeated former state Sen. Kirsten Engel in 2022 by less than 2%. The two find themselves on the ballot against each other once again.
This week on The Gaggle, a politics podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, host Ron Hansen is joined by one of the Republic's national politics reporters Laura Gersony to talk through who the competitors are for these districts and how they define themselves.
