Heck, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it isn't beyond possibility that incompetent (and mentally unstable) people have been recruited to stage threats to him that could promote the hero/victim persona he's cultivated amongst his cult members.
The problem with the chaos cult tactics he uses to promote himself above the other GOP grifters is that it sets up an internecine war - there can be only one, and the GOP is full of narcissists and sociopaths jostling to be in charge. Not to mention the big money with their own agendas. If TFG no longer is useful to them, either as a figurehead to hide them or as an attack dog against "their enemies", he's going to be martyred as his last useful act - silenced but waived around as a bloody shirt.
Grifters want to stay alive. While there's some gain in being portrayed as a victim, there's no pleasure or profit in being martyred.

He doesn't want to die. He wants events he can manipulate for fundraising, sympathy, and for permission to use violent rhetoric against his opponent.

Of course, he's never needed permission to use violent rhetoric, but he can use it to manipulate friendly (and feckless) media outlets into believing he's justified in using violent rhetoric.

But he definitely doesn't want to die. He wants to escape justice through trickery - one way he believes he can achieve that is by winning the election - and that avenue is closing off to him as the campaign continues.
