Important context here from Marc Caputo. The Trump campaign wants to be talking about immigration at all times, and they don't mind lying to force that conversation: https://thebulwark.com/p/trump-team-takes-hit-on-cat-eating-springfield-haitians-immigration

Trump Team: Well Take The Hit on Cat Eating to Keep Immigration in the News
The ex-presidents team, led by JD Vance, would rather talk about migration than abortion. And Springfield allows them to.

DONALD TRUMPS CAMPAIGN IS NOT displeased that theyve been widely condemned for spreading the urban legend of Haitian migrants eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio.
If the national media is talking about immigration, they reason, theyre winning.
The mastermind of the cynical, xenophobic strategy, Trump running mate JD Vance, acknowledged in Sunday show interviews that he platformed the unsubstantiated pet-eating rumors to force a conversation about the downsides of Vice President Kamala Harriss immigration policies.
If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then thats what Im going to do, Vance told Dana Bash on CNNs State of the Union, because you guys are completely letting Kamala Harris coast.
When Bash noted that Vance had admitted to creating the story, the Ohio Republican insisted he was basing his statements on firsthand accounts from my constituents. But then he betrayed the real purpose of his remarks: He wanted the media to focus on immigration.

The ultimate in a Reality Television Presidency - these fuckers think it is all about performative politics. Where Oscar and Emmy awards are handed out for the very best stage performances.

(112,274 posts)3. They seem to think immigration is still their stongest issue?
Perhaps it is with their base, but many voters have become more enlightened.
They understand that there was a bi-partisan piece of legislation, billed as the most effective in decades, that was shot down by Trump. He called up his allies in Congress and advised (ordered) them to stop the legislation because he preferred to have it as an "issue" than to have it resolved.

This isnt talking about immigration, this is all about realist tropes. People can understand that for sure.
