Ryan Wesley Routh. Not Black. Not trans. Not an immigrant. Not a Democrat. Ant-vax. History of Mental Illness and incidents with firearms. Had an assault rifle anyway. Was nowhere near Trump, didn't fire any shots, Secret Service shot at him.

Social media posts purported to belong to Routh indicate he was a believer in COVID-19 conspiracy theories, and he had posted that he had voted for Trump in 2016 but was disappointed with him after the fact, expressing support for Tulsi Gabbard in various posts.

He had other tweets about saving the Haiku stairs in Hawaii. Never heard of those so looked them up:

Anyway, he obviously fancies himself some kind of great crusader out to defend the oppressed and save the world and he's willing die doing it.

So, no - I don't think quite all the facets made its way in to the OP.

keep asking when this crap happens is why does it matter? Only unstable people do this kind of crap.
I find it inappropriate at all levels to use the incident as some sort of gotcha, regardless of what an unstable asshole has regarding political affiliations. He's crazy. Yet we see this same cycle of crap here, in the media, everywhere.

(11,583 posts)If I read it properly he was arrested for having a concealed weapon but it was a misdemeanor. Sounds like an average trumper to me, assasination attempt is kind of a stretch. But really, its good to see previous Trump supporters turn against him. Not to the point of wanting to kill him though.

Apparently, he donated to Tulsi Gabbard, Andrew Yang, Tom Steyer, Beto O'Rourke, and Elizabeth Warren. He voted for Trump in 2016, but not 2020.

(8,221 posts)...then looked to everyone and everything that could beat Trump. When Biden/Harris was an option, he chose to promote Haley/Ramaswamy. If he ended up supporting Biden/Harris, it sounds like he did so after all his Republican options failed and they were his last resort.

W_HAMILTON
(8,221 posts)I would count support as voting for someone in an election, and I'm pretty sure he hasn't lived in a state where he could vote for any of those three in an election.
And while I don't remember if I've ever donated to a Republican campaign, I have voted in a Republican primary (to support a Republican that voted to impeach Trump vs his MAGA opponent) and I am most certainly not a Republican and I would hope no one would ever label me as such because they misconstrued my efforts to DEFEAT the worst Republicans as me supporting them.
We know that he previously voted for Trump and was promoting a "winning ticket" of Haley/Ramaswamy earlier this year -- both things someone that wants Democrats to win in the General Election would not do.

Fla_Democrat
(2,567 posts)It says in the link....
Florida prohibits any person from owning or possessing a machine gun that is, or may readily be made, operable, except for antique firearms or firearms that are permitted under federal law.
So if you have a tax stamp they are legal to own. But from the pictures I have seen, it doesn't look like an AK-47, more like a sporterized SKS. It appears to have a monte carlo stock and a scope mount.
Though the photos seem to be a bit grainy.
I can't tell one gun from another by looking at it. I was just going based on the name and knowing AK-47s to be machine guns.
Fla_Democrat
(2,567 posts)It's not like firearms is a popular subject around here.
I just did a bit of research back in the day when I was getting a few NFA items. No selective fire (yet), but a SBR or so with some cans,
But, laws do change (seems like every time they have a session, some stupid slips out) , so it's good to keep on top of it.

(37,611 posts)A gun that very much looks like a select fire AK-47.
Like the AR-15. Colt is the only manufacturer that makes the AR-15 but there are dozens of other companies that make look -a -likes.

(3,717 posts)The perp's rifle is more likely a modified SKS, as the stock is straighter, no "pistol grip" feature. Photo is not really ideal for better identification, but from what I can tell, it's an SKS with an after market stock, and most likely a "duck-bill" 30 rd magazine.
iemanja
(54,046 posts)this might have been something he picked up in the Ukraine. That is if he actually ever went?
Fla_Democrat
(2,567 posts)No, not something worth dragging back from overseas. Unless he had a special connection to getting it. i.e. war trophy, belonged to a good friend, etc.
He probably picked it up off of gun broker, or a yard sale. Not like they are high end, highly sought after rifles. My guess is somebody bought one during the "assault weapon ban" back in the 90's. Bubba'd it up, and left it to a family member in passing.
Again, that's if it's an SKS. I would like to see a better picture, It could be a dragunov, but I highly doubt it.

(3,717 posts)But that is NOT an AK-style grip. In line, with slight "pistol grip" curve. My bet is on the SKS, as the front looks like it, and the SKS has that type of stock, though that one is an after market one. The magazine is probably a "duck-bill" type, or it is one of the rarer modified SKS's that take AK mags. Too short for a Drag, those things are almost 5 feet long, with flash suppressor, and would be a longer (front to back) magazine.

(3,717 posts)would not have fallen under either the '94 ban or the proposed '23 ban. Whatever they are deciding to call it, the base firearm appears to be an SKS, which did not fall under either ban. The magazine itself, yes, but not the firearm. If he had actually been convicted of a felony punishable by over a year in prison prior, he would not have been able to legally own ANY firearm, anyway. So, there's that.
