is that having a wealth of easily accessible firearms in a nation with a wealth of untreated mental health cases is a recipe for danger.

(714 posts)When his followers become disenchanted they will do what they were conditioned to do, only turned on the one that conditioned them. And with easy access well this is what trump and crew wrought.

However, I do not recall in the entire history of our country,
of any other president or candidate
who was BEGGING to be shot at, to the degree that THIS one is doing.
(and the Haitians are still only shopping guns and researching about 2nd amendment rights---
not to mention what dogs and cats may be doing)....

(46,662 posts)For a nutcase radical Marxist, to have shot and killed John F. Kennedy?
Hell, I read an article back in the early 80's that made "connections" between George HW Bush, and the certified insane guy who shot Reagan.
(Those "connections" turned out to be bullshit.)
Or a bunch of religious nuts hijack planes to suicide fly them into buildings?

(7,909 posts)I don't find it difficult to believe Oswald acted alone. The only presidential assassin who I believe was part of a conspiracy was Booth.
Nor do I find it difficult to believe the 9/11 conspirators acted as they did.

(46,662 posts)The fact is, you're correct in what you said.
BUT...
Conspiracy theorists just can't fathom people being crazy or fanatical.
It has to be a "BIG CONSPIRACY."

(436 posts)but the range was not all that great, and Oswald was trained by the United States Marine Corps to be an expert marksman---
and "investigative shows" on cable have proved to me that he could have made the 3 shots with the rifle in question within the time-frame that the shots were recorded.
Some may still argue that it was "unlikely" that Oswald could have made the shot, but I am not swayed by those arguments.
The remaining questions on the Kennedy assassination pertain more to whether anyone else was involved, and whom, and to whether there might have been any second gunman. I think the big "cover-up" may have pertained to Oswald having been encouraged by agents of the Soviet Union to perform the act, which is perfectly plausible--- but the Johnson administration did not want those ideas to gain traction because the American people might have demanded some kind of retribution--- and little more than a year after the Cuban missile crisis, the administration did not wish to risk nuclear war with the USSR which neither side would "win"..... so Oswald was judged as having 'acted alone'.

The great majority of the assassins were lone wolfs.
I'm unaware of a single example where it was the target that orchestrated the attempt for political or personal gain .

(58 posts)While it seems true that people who commit gun violence often have mental health issues, this doesn't mean mental health problems cause such violence. Factors such as substance abuse, trauma, social isolation, and extreme political views likely play a more significant role in someone commuting violence.
The vast majority of us with mental health problems (depression, in my case) are not violent.
After one (I forget which) of the mass shootings in Texas, the Governor mistakenly focused on mental health rather than on gun control. He said (to paraphrase) that The problem was not Good Guys with guns, but Crazy People with guns! Having said this he then loosened gun laws and cut mental health funding. This is not even internally consistent!
The underlying problem is not an individuals MH, but the social problem of the widespread availability of firearms, many of which are weapons of war to which civilians should have NO access.
I also want to stress that I believe that the vast majority of Americans are truly appalled by any shooting. Perhaps, for those of us of a certain age, some are most appalled by murder attempts on any elected official or candidateno matter what their politics.
Well, that took longer than I thought. We can now move on to what The Good Book has say on the issue:
Hebrew Bible
Galatians 6 : 7 :
"Do not be deceived: God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap."
Proverbs 19:21: "There is a plan for the evil man, and a snare for the worker of iniquity."
Hosea 8: 7 : "They have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind."
Christian New Testament
Matthew 7:1-2: "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be
judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."
Luke 6:38: "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again."
2-Corinthians 9:6: "But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap bountifully."
The Buddha made the same point in his metaphor which goes something along the lines of One must sow the seeds of kindness, compassion, and wisdom, to reap the fruits of happiness, peace, and enlightenment
