https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/sep/15/liz-cheney-ginni-thomas-january-6-investigationIn Stench: The Making of the Thomas Court and the Unmaking of America, the reporter and Democratic operative David Brock writes that two Capitol Hill sources with personal knowledge revealed a dramatic truth, which might shock even some jaded Washington veterans not easily surprised by callow examples of power protecting power.
Liz Cheney herself, the star of the hearings, doing her turn as independent-minded maverick Republican, did all she could behind the scenes to protect Ginni and Clarence Thomas and thwart the move to investigate further the implications of the Ginni Thomas texts to [Mark] Meadows, Trumps final White House chief of staff.
Thomas and Meadows swapped extensive messages about attempts to overturn Joe Bidens election win. The texts, including indications Thomas discussed matters with her husband, were leaked to CNN in April 2022, as the January 6 committee continued its work.
Be interesting to see if Cheney refutes this presentation.

(4,258 posts)Cheney lends R support to the committee in return for keeping the focus on T and sparing the QOP.
Her mission was to save the Right from Trump. She got booted, but she's still a star.
This is why so many insurrectionists kept their seats in Congress, and RV Thomas kept his power.

(4,258 posts)But I've thought "deal" for a long time.
Darth Cheney's daughter is a loyal right-winger. She (and the other cavalcade of never trump R's) are thinking long-term, beyond T's lifespan.

(37,603 posts)Now their party is fractured & probably broke. LOL. I'd love to be in the room the day repub leadership gets a real look at the RNC books.

Seize the opportunity!
They figured they could shave a whole generation of time off the Powell Memo long-term plan. It's a crapshoot. They're betting on a roll of the dice, with pretty good odds. They have a tv star!

(7,428 posts)* "real DOJ", a government agency responsible for prosecuting any illegal activities, even those politically motivated which threaten our representative democracy system of government, no matter the culprit or their ideology.
Also, when we hear the words "radical Democrats" from our newly discovered Republican comrades, we'll know the enemy among us is making their move.

(1,425 posts)ever trust a republican. Use them like they use us.
I do fear that the 'Never Trumpers' will try to take over our Democratic Party. They allowed the ruination of their party and are without a party to claim. It's good that they are trying to separate themselves from the MAGA party, but my fear is at what cost will we Democrats have to pay the price for it?

(4,258 posts)we need to stay left and not let us become "centrist" (aka right wing) as they shift the Overton window to the right.
I always say: in a contest between faux Republicans and real Republicans, the real ones always win in the end.
Look where "reaching across the aisle" has gotten the country. It's like T's handshake trick to pull you off balance.

Cheney would go after only Trump and protect all the other high level GOP leaders.

(19,667 posts)But prior to J6 she voted with Trump 98% of the time and prior to Trump, well she WAS Liz Freaking Cheney. People tend to forget that her brand hard right Conservatism, while not the psychotic twisted version practiced by the Freedom Caucus, was still anathema to our Democratic tenets and that Conservatism was instilled in her by one of the most evil and cynical men to ever hold office. She may be an enemy of our enemy at the moment, and therefore useful, but that doesnt make her our friend and never will.

It disturbs me that people are actually tossing her name around as a possible cabinet member.

It seems its one thing to go after a corrupt outsider like Putins orange pee-brain and another off-limits to go after the BFEEs corrupt SCrOTUS stooge Clarence RV 2 Bohemian Grove Thomas.
Not a good look for a lawyer or a repuglian.

(824 posts)She only speaks out against Trump because she wants him gone so she and her ilk can go back to being nasty, conniving Republicans and get away with more shit. Just like her daddy, just like all those others who are "backing Harris".
Don't be fooled, people. They aren't on our side. We're just doing their dirty work for them. Don't think for a minute that they won't be hating on Harris the minute she wins.

(11,338 posts)But what has prevented the DOJ from investigating Ginni? She is on record for calling Republican state election officials telling them to send fraudulent slates of electors to Congress. She paid to bus people (which people?) to the Capitol on January 6. I guess if youre the wife of a Supreme Court justice who became rich from bribes, you also have absolute immunity for anything you want to do.

(1,444 posts)I'm sure it's true. She dislikes numnutz, but she's still awful. Nice that she speaks out one one thing. But her voting record is awful. She says and stands for all the horrific things they all do on that side.

(23,855 posts)I don't trust any of these rethugs in their support for Harris/Walz. The minute they're elected, the work will start to obstruct and screw them over in an effort to make them a one term Pres/VP. They'll keep trying to destroy SCOTUS too. Liz Cheney is no hero.

(4,643 posts)To be knowledgeable of and help manage the Jan 6 committee? She had inside knowledge, and access to all the dirt and could help keep it going in certain directions while subtly steering it away from other directions like Ginni and Co.
Of course, this is all hindsight. I never actually was suspicious during the investigation. Silly me.

(20,556 posts)are hoping to get rid of Trump and Reclaim the Republican Party. It's a welcome marriage of convenience but one would be shortsighted to think that Liz and the lads will be manning the barriers with the left. That's ok too, Trump and Putin are the existential threat, and besides hating Trump, Liz etc want Ukraine to win.

(30,958 posts)The Jan. 6 Committee had a huge hurdle right off in that it needed to be seen as nonpartisan or else the results would be dismissed.
If the committee went after all the other actors in what we realize amounted to a pretty vast conspiracy to keep Trump in office, then it surely would have been seen as a politically motivated and sprawling hit piece. It had to be laser-focused on Trump's role. It is possible that the choice was between getting the goods on Trump or spreading it out and getting nobody at all.
I can easily believe that Cheney wanted to preserve the remains of the Republican Party so she can rebuild it post-Trump, but it still was probably the best strategy for the result to be criminal indictments against Trump.
