"SNIP............
New York Times: For the second straight presidential election, it is becoming increasingly likely that there will be no clear and immediate winner on election night and that early returns could give a false impression of who will ultimately prevail.
Large swaths of Americans have changed their voting habits in recent years, relying increasingly on mail-in ballots, which take more time to count than those cast in person on Election Day. States with prolonged vote-counting processes, such as Arizona, have become suddenly competitive. And the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump appears extremely close.
If a winner is not declared on election night, it will not necessarily point to failures in the process. More likely, it will be a result of the intense security measures required for counting mail-in ballots.

(407 posts)This not having the vote tallies on election night is bullshit. Other countries do it.

(11,420 posts)Harris/Walz. I truly believe the polls are off, because of new voters, women and young people not being properly accounted for.

(10,335 posts)The demographics who vote early vs late (even when most voted on the same day) or send their ballots early vs late, have always been different. And it also takes longer to get results from more populous areas.
It's an overgeneralization, but often older demographics that lean more conservative vote, send, or drop off ballots earlier while younger demographics that lean progressive often procrastinate a bit and vote, send, or drop off ballots later. Add that to results from smaller, conservative leaning places coming in first and you have a formula for early leads by conservative candidates to be overtaken by progressive candidates in many, many races.
This should be no surprise to anyone.
Tragically, the far right's rewriting of our common history has turned this normal course of events into evidence of a "steal." It is incredible that people who have lived through many elections and experienced for themselves how this goes now see it all as evidence of a grand conspiracy.

(10,479 posts)Every registered voter is sent a mail-in ballot. Ballots must be postmarked by 8 PM on election day but theres a grace period to account for post office delays. Provisional ballots, ones with signatures that dont quite match or are missing, unreadable ones are processed individually, which nan take up to a month. For some reason, California thinks its worth taking a few weeks after election day to make sure every voter is heard. And if the MSM doesnt like it, tough.
