(63,387 posts)For decades I've watched Republican politicians tell blatant lies, and Democratic politicians scurry around trying to refute the lies by talking about facts and figures. The interesting lies won every time.
For the first time, I'm watching the Democrats bring it. Kamala's facial expressions during the debate were perfect. Spreading couch memes about JD Vance beat them at their own game.
And Biden was brilliant to take "let's go Brandon" and make it his own with Dark Brandon.
It's a new world of online communication. Ideas are spread by memes.
When Trump said that immigrants are eating our pets in national TV he finally took a step too far.
I say, mock the hell out of it.

The lie is to make Haitian immigrants out to be the other who can't even honor the importance of our pets. It's to denigrate Haitians.

(18,434 posts)There are both introverts and extroverts on this forum.
There are a lot of people who are afraid to post things if they are extremely introverted.
When people are "requested" not to post certain things, they may never post anything again because they feel like they did something wrong. As a result, the forum is diminished.
Your OP is not about fostering discussion, instead, your OP is literally asking someone not to post something they may think is interesting or funny.
There are a lot of things that I don't like to read here, so I don't read them.
But public censorship is not really a progressive attribute.
I hope I'm not coming across too harshly, and I do understand your opinion, but asking someone not to post something is a hot button for me.
And yes, I realize that this may sound hypocritical since I am expressing my displeasure because you posted something.
It's just a hot button that I have. We have no idea of anyone's situation in here. Some people might take days to summon up the courage to post, and then they see someone asking them not to post? It doesn't sit well with me.

I understand how distasteful and even how triggering the topic might be.
In a better world or in better times I might agree that bringing this up has served its purpose, and then some.
However, there are two factors to consider.
First, the GOP candidates for president and vice president continue to bring this up, and evidently there are millions of their followers who are willing to believe it. To point out the absurdity, with or without humor, is relevant to a national campaign in which we are fighting for the very existence of our democratic institutions. This story is intensely racist, demonizing an entire community, and some folks deep in the MAGA cult may well end up targeting entirely innocent people because of this vicious lie. For this reason alone it's crucial that the point be debunked at every turn.
Second, as has been said many times, with Republicans every accusation is a confession.
Trump has announced he is willing to place on his cabinet an individual who at the very least has a disturbing relationship with animals. There's the dead bear in the trunk dumped in Central Park. There's the beached whale that he decapitated with a chain saw in front of his six year old daughter. There's a video of him actually eating a dog--which may have brought about the infamous brain worm infection.
So clearly this sort of behavior is not a problem for Trump and his minions.
Just as the accusations of pedophilia and sex trafficking they make against Democrats warrant a closer look at Trump's own behavior, I think both the accusation of animal cruelty and the acceptance of RFK Jr. make me wonder what might be under the GOP hood.
There is, after all, the photo of one of Trump's spawn holding with evident glee the severed tail of a dead elephant.
The media won't go there, but I think we should.
As a rape survivor I know something about being triggered. I also know that sometimes being triggered is what needs to happen in order to confront the ugliness around us.
Edited to add: the fallout from this vicious lie has already begun: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143305531

(152,001 posts)In 2016, after peddling baseless claims, Trump said, All I know is whats on the internet. In 2024, the phrase now summarizes much of the GOPs worldview.

In 2024, the phrase summarizes much of the Republican Party's worldview. Take Bill Hagerty's line on the racist pet-eating theory, for example.
https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/gop-senator-tries-fails-defend-racist-theory-pet-eaters-rcna170814
In reality, of course, Trump had no idea what he was talking about. He mightve convinced himself that the crackpot theory has merit, but it does not, and local officials have thoroughly discredited this ugly nonsense.
Nevertheless, roughly 24 hours after the debate, Sen. Bill Hagerty sat down with CNNs Kaitlan Collins, who asked the Tennessee Republican whether his partys presidential nominee wouldve been better off avoiding the racist theory for which there is no evidence. The senator replied:
Well, you talk about evidence. Ive heard conflicting reports. Theres conflicting evidence. Theres a lot of information on the internet that this is happening. ... The city officials arent the only source. There are plenty of people who are saying this is happening.
.....It wasn't an isolated incident. Ask Republicans why they continue to believe ridiculous election conspiracy theories, and theyre likely to point to nonsense they found online. Ask them about their opposition to Covid vaccines, and youll probably get a similar response. Ask those caught up in the QAnon delusion how they slipped into the madness, and many will say the same thing.
The point is not that all online news is wrong. I publish online commentary for a living, so Im the last person whod encourage folks to reflexively disregard information from the internet.
Rather, the point is that major political parties and politicians seeking the publics trust need to be able to distinguish between credible information from legitimate outlets, and sheer madness that happens to reinforce their preconceived ideas.
Republicans, in other words, not only need to choose good information over bad, they also need to understand how to choose good information over bad. As Bill Hagerty helped demonstrate, its a skill too much of the party seems to lack right now.
As national security attorney Bradley P. Moss lamented, The Party of Lincoln and Reagan has been reduced to I saw something online.

(7,174 posts)I haven't laughed this hard in a long while. Yesterday my family and I traded pet eating memes from the Internet and just about died of laughter. I want this moment to last as long as possible. This is the complete and long-over-due humiliation of accidental president, GOP cult leader, and failed businessman Donald J. Trump. I'm loving it.
